The Great Experiment (part 2)

The next step was to start the masking process. A lengthy and tedious process, but very much rewarding in the end. I went with the MaskDesign set by Gary Chomiak. I went with the full set for the refit, not the A-version. The masking set comes with instructions, however the kit is best utilized when using the Trekmodeler instruction manual (which I fortunately had on hand).

For the paints, I went with Mission Models Colour change lineup. They got the job done. Each time the colours were used, it was diluted with 70/30 ratio of mission models thinner.

Each time the weeding pattern is applied to one pie section, the inverse pattern is applied to both sides. This now creates a contrasting pattern throughout the length of the hull. When the initial weeding pattern is completed, I use the colour sheets to apply red, green, and gold, to each individual pie section. For the gold, the colour is too intense, so I add a light dusting of white on top. This gets it to the desired colour.

(above) an example of the green iridescent colour going down on top of the original blue weeding.

After the upper saucer pattern was applied, I transitioned to the lower saucer.

After all that hard work, I had to take some beauty shots in low light...it really made me feel like the hard work was paying off.

After a "short" break, I got back to work on more of the pattern for the hull. There was lots more paint work to go.

Next up I sanded the horrendous seams on the nacelles. This took way too much time and putty to correct. I was very disappointed in the quality of some of the parts in this kit. Specifically with their fitment.

The rest of the build photos can be viewed on my YouTube channel listed below. I compiled them into a chronological timeline of the build. Check it out HERE.

These final photos were taken by Bill Johnston Photography. His professionalism and enthusiasm was very much appreciated. He approached the shoot with some creative ideas ahead of time, which turned out to make some of the best looking shots. His website can be found HERE.
